We asked our Facebook fans this question: What’s the one thing you’ve done that has had the biggest impact on reducing your family’s expenses?
Here’s what some of them had to say:
“Getting rid of cable was kind of huge for us. We watch shows on Netflix or Hulu now. Added bonus: no commercials!” – Jessica Beck, downtown Portland
“We are getting rid of our home phone line and have created a budget tracker sheet that we keep handy. Now whenever we spend money, we write it down on the sheet in the appropriate category. It’s a little more work but it discourages overspending.” – Shari Porter Smith, Tualatin
“Find entertainment in simple free ways – like free concerts, free community events, especially tips through Metro Parent.” – Heather Dominguez, southeast Portland (Thanks for the plug, Heather!)
“Turning off lights while not in use, and especially leaving the thermostat at about 62-63 last winter, rather than closer to 70 in years past. (The house is drafty but we got used to it, and layered more.) Also, couponing and looking through supermarket flyers for the deals.” – Iris Oren Cox, southwest Portland
“Switched to cloth diapers & wipes!” – Laura Perkins, Springfield
“Surprisingly enough, it was eating healthy. We have dramatically reduced how often we eat out, to about once a month now, we have reduced our portion, meaning more food stays in the pantry, and we have been eating less premade foods. It’s a little more work, but not only do our waist lines appreciate it (my husband has lost 37 pounds!), our wallets appreciate it.” – Rebecca Magby, Beaverton
“Eliminated processed foods. Eat whole foods.” – Kerri Tobin Hanson, southwest Portland
“Cooking whole foods at home and no more lattes!” – Robin Ridolphi Harmon, St. Johns
