The Experience: Going to any of Portland’s numerous farmers markets is a bit like going to a small town fair, complete with fresh produce, irresistible baked goods, live music and other entertainment.
We live in Northeast Portland, and are lucky to be in walking distance of the Hollywood Farmers Market. Ever since our kids were little, we’ve been heading down there on Saturday mornings for a week’s worth of produce, plus some on-site treats. These goodies vary with the seasons and our moods, but have included such things as sausage and sauerkraut sandwiches, luscious ripe strawberries, freshly baked cowgirl cookies, crisp apples, crepes with spinach and cheese, plump blueberries, juicy peaches, crunchy carrots, spicy Indian dal, and local goat cheese.
In addition to experiencing fresh produce and exotic flavors at the farmers market, we also undoubtedly run into dozens of people we know during our weekly visits. It truly is a gathering place for the neighborhood. There’s nothing like watching your kids eat fresh, healthful food and listen to local musicians perform, while you chat with friends and neighbors. It’s the village at its best.
The Hollywood Farmers Market opens May 7. Other neighborhood markets opening the first week of May include King, Shemanski Park, and Buckman. The Beaverton Farmers Market opens in mid-May and the downtown Portland Farmers Market has been running since the end of March.
