Central Salmon River

The Experience: This gorgeous hike takes you through old-growth forest and along the middle section of the Salmon River, where kids can float sticks, skip stones and dip their toes. And because there’s almost no elevation gain, even younger trekkers can enjoy the walk.

The trail parallels the river for the first two miles. At about half a mile, you come to a deep pool that makes a great snack or lunch spot; the intrepid may want to wade or swim, but beware – the water is frigid.

For a longer hike, continue to Rolling Riffle Camp at 2 miles; older kids may enjoy the challenge of hiking all the way to the canyon viewpoint at 3.5 miles.

Inside information:For those wanting to try backpacking with their kids, this is a perfect place to start. Several spacious tent sites are available at Rolling Riffle Camp, about 2 miles in. They fill up quickly on warm summer weekends, so plan to get an early start.

The 411
Ages: Best for kids five and up, due to the proximity of the trail to the river.
