The Experience: This is one of our favorite urban wilderness areas in Portland, not just because my daughter and I once saw a great horned owl there in broad daylight. It’s a wonderful example of how the natural world can survive, and even thrive, in the middle of an industrial area.
Located on N.E. 47th Avenue north of Columbia Boulevard, the ponds are adjacent to the Columbia River Slough. Before being cleaned up in the late ‘90’s, the area was home to a junk yard, complete with 2000 old tires. Now restored to its natural state, it’s a great place to view wildlife, especially birds.
In addition to the great horned owl (which reportedly has a nest and a couple of babies this year) you’re likely to see great blue herons, wigeons, mergansers, bufflehead, turtles, salamander and deer. Bring a small container so that when you walk down the ramp to the dock on the west pond, your child can scoop up some of the water and study what she sees.
A couple of outhouses are the only option for restrooms, but they are usually clean and well-stocked.
And make sure you leave for your kids to climb the willow trees that beckon as you walk back to the parking area.
Insider info: The Columbia Slough Watershed Coucil occasionally sponsors boat tours of the area, using their very stable canoe “bimarans” (two canoes lashed together with wood), which makes the trip suitable for even very young children. The knowledgeable guides point out birds and mammals you might not otherwise notice, and are full of interesting tidbits, such as when the blackberries in the area ripen.
