The Experience: With a paved path and plenty to look at, this public garden across the street from Reed College is a great place to bring young children and babies in strollers. Spring, when the hundreds of azaleas and rhododendrons are in bloom, is the most spectacular time to visit, but the garden holds attractions year-round.
The park features a lake with waterfalls, bridges and numerous kinds of waterfowl. Kids love feeding the birds, which will flock to them (but watch out – they can be aggressive). The proximity and variety of species make this an ideal place to introduce your kids to basic birdwatching.
In addition to the ubiquitous mallards and Canada geese, you’re likely to spot great blue herons, red-winged blackbirds, buffleheads, wood ducks and mergansers. And even if you’re not an expert, an illustrated sign near the duck pond makes identification of the different species easy.
Make sure to stop at the Berry Good Produce stand nearby to pick up some grain ($1 per bag) for the birds before you get to the park; feeding bread or other food intended for humans is harmful to them.
Bring a picnic or snack to enjoy on the green lawn toward the middle of the park, where the restrooms are also located. On warm, sunny days, the kids may want to stay for a couple of hours.
Insider tip: If you don’t like crowds, avoid the Rhododendron Garden on Mothers Day Weekend. This is when the annual plant show and sale are held, and the place is usually mobbed.
