Last week we posted information on Facebook and Twitter about a local program collecting breast milk for infants and children who survived the recent earthquake in Haiti. The response was so strong we thought we should post it here, too.
But first, we want to announce a way to DOUBLE YOUR MONETARY DONATIONS for Haiti relief: We’ll match the first $1,000 donated to Mercy Corps for Haiti relief when you donate on our Mercy Corps Page. Thank you!
Now for the info on breast milk donations: In conjunction with World Health Organization, Adventist Medical Center’s breast milk donor depot is accepting donations of breast milk to send to Haiti from qualified mothers.
To become a donor, lactating mothers need to:
- Contact the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA) at 1-866-998-4550 to be pre-screened via phone.
- If approved by the HMBANA, the mother should then contact her OBGYN and pediatrician for approval and to get a blood test done.
- Finally, the mother’s milk should be delivered to Adventist Medical Center’s Family Birth Place at 10123 SE Market St., Portland; 503-251-MAMA.
All breast milk donations are screened and pasteurized before delivery. What a wonderful – and unexpected – way to help the youngest survivors of this catastrophic earthquake!

Survival of infants in disaster situations such as earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, and wars is dependent on “breastfeeding” and “wet-nursing.” Human milk is usually frozen and shipped, thawed and is dependent on refrigeration, fuel, and clean water. Where in the Haiti hit by this earthquake are you going to find refrigeration, fuel for sterilizing feeding equipment, and clean water?
