There are so many holiday shows to choose from, it’s difficult to decide which ones to see. Every family has their favorites, but we’d like to put in a special plug for Play After Play, a truly unique theater experience for kids and families. Play After Play shows begin with a short performance based on “loosely adapted” folk tales from different cultures, specifically designed to engage young audiences. But what makes these shows so unique is the way they end, with a structured physical and social play experience that introduces kids to peaceful play.
This year’s holiday show, Music from Around the World, showcases a rich array of world music from previous Play After Play productions. Kids and parents are invited to sing along as the company performs a variety of songs from different countries, then out come the mats for the “play” after the “play.”
Recommended for kids between 2 and 9, Play After Play’s engaging performances include music, movement and storytelling. The physical play portion of the program introduces alternatives to violence and aggression, helping children understand the difference between safe play in which no one gets hurt and the aggressive play they might have experienced in other settings.
We love this innovative, entertaining and educational theater company for kids and families, so we’re excigted to give away a set of four tickets to Music from Around the World for Saturday, December 19 (10 am show) or Sunday, December 20 (2 pm show).

This would end up being my favorite performance for the year. We’ve done a lot of free or low cost things together as a family, but haven’t been able to afford anything more than a school fundraiser movie.
For Valentine’s day this year, my mom bought my daughter, my sister, and me tickets to “Click, Clack, Moo, Cows that Type”. It was a fabulous first theatre experience for my daughter, and I look forward to providing her more opportunities. However, due to family budget constraints, we are limited to local school performances that are free — which are fun and fabulous in their own way!
I would have to ay Rhys Thomas and Just in Time performing at the Rose Festival Waterfront Village. Thomas is an amazing juggler entertaining big and little kids. The latter a silly variety show. My son was so focussed. He was laughing so hard that the adults around me were watching him more than the show. The joy on his face is one I will never forget. My angel was so happy that day. I will never forget that moment.
My favorite children’s performance this year was an old-timey singing cowboy trio at our local library. My 11-year-old son and I just happened to be walking by and heard the music and went in. It turns out we were the only ones there who were NOT library employees, so I was really happy that we went.
The musicians gave a fantastic performance and my son and I both had a great time.
My favorite performance this year was our schools Night with Dickens. The kids did a wonderful job and had the audience in their grasp.
Congratulations Sonya! You’re our winner. Thanks to everyone for entering, and happy holidays from Metro Parent!
