Oregon State Fair. It’s The Big One. Plan on arriving early in the day – you’ll need the time to do this Oregon celebration justice. Lots of free entertainment including: USO-style show, talent contest, rodeo, circuses, sea lion encounters, magic and more – plus the Midway and carnival rides. Don’t miss the “Just for Fun” competitions including the Watermelon Seed Spitting, Corn Shucking and Dress a Fruit or Veggie contests (with the latter, kids get free admission). And the animal barns – from chickens and bunnies to Belgian horses and pigs (and piglets). 10 am to 11 pm Aug. 28, 29, Sept. 4 and 5. 10 am to 10 pm Aug. 30, 31 and Sept. 1, 2, 3, 6 and 7. $10 adults, $5 ages 6 to 12, free 5 and under, discount for advance purchase; extra charge for rides, some activities and shows. Mt. Hood Huckleberry Festival and Barlow Trail Days. Celebrate the rich history of the Oregon Trail with entertainment, storytelling, treats to buy, watermelon launch (Sat. afternoon), exhibits, tours and more. All ages. 8 am to 10 pm Aug. 28 and 29. 8 am to 5 pm Aug. 30. Free.

Saturday, Aug. 29
Festa Italiana
. Celebrate all things Italian with entertainment, activities and more. Aug. 28 starting about 1:30 pm there will be a grape stomp, kids’ pizza toss, marionette show and face painting. Opera 6:30 pm Aug. 29. All ages. 4 to 11 pm Aug. 27. Noon to 11 pm Aug. 28. 11 an to 11 pm Aug. 29. Free; food for sale. Pioneer Courthouse Square, 6th and Broadway. www.festa-italiana.org.
Bug Fest. Games, displays, crafts, live bugs and guided activities to celebrate dragonflies and other insects. Bring a bug to be identified by an expert. All ages. 11 am to 4 pm. $2.

Movies and Music at Meinig. The city of Sandy hosts various artists and movies all summer at Meinig Park. All ages. Concerts at 6:30 pm Weds. and some Suns. Movies at dusk. Aug. 29: Mary Poppins. Concordia University Community Open House. A family-friendly event to celebrate the opening of the George R. Oregon Holocaust Memorial Fifth Anniversary Celebration
