Donating – and receiving – school supplies

It’s back-to-school time – and that means it’s time to purchase all of those pencils, markers, crayons and glue sticks.
For some families, unfortunately, the cost of supplies is simply out of reach. And, with our current recession, the numbers of families who need help buying school supplies has increased. “Times are tough right now, and we are seeing more families struggling to provide basic needs,” says Cara Larson, family educator for the Children’s Home Society of Washington (CHSW).
It’s in that spirit that CHSW is hosting a “School Supplies Donation Day” on Saturday, Aug. 29 from 11 am to 3 pm at the CHS office, 309 W 12th St., Vancouver. Families are invited to attend the event to sign-up to receive school supplies for their children – or they can attend and donate needed items. The event includes a tour of the facility and a free lunch, compliments of Salmon Creek Lions Cub.
“With the school year fast approaching and school supply lists growing, this event is an opportunity for people to come together to help their community,” says Larson. “Together we can support families who need a little extra help while making sure kids are ready for school.”
CHSW notes that they need the following: backpacks, binders, scissors, glue sticks, paper and spirals, #2 pencils and pencil boxes, 24 pack crayons, Kleenex, hand sanitizer, subject dividers, pearl pink erasers, 2 pocket folders and markers.
Families interested in donating can drop-off supplies on Aug. 29 or 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Thursday, and 9 am to 3 pm Friday. (Please note that families signing up to receive supplies will need to pick them up at the Vancouver CHSW office.)
