You won’t be disappointed! We’ve got an in-depth report on the state of civics education locally. You may be surprised by what we discovered. (Hint: it doesn’t bode well for the future of our democracy.)
We take a thoughtful look at families living with autism – what are their struggles, challenges and successes? Our reporter dived so deeply into the subject of ASDs (Autism Spectrum Disorders) that we also have an extended online autism section, with tons of resources, that you can access by clicking here.
The September issue also contains the results of our annual “Family Favorites” reader survey. More…

My father spent most of his childhood on a farm in Kansas and considered himself a country boy at heart. Likely due to those rural roots, he insisted that our family adopt an end-of-the-summer tradition of visiting the Oregon State Fair each year. He wanted his kids to have at least some familiarity with farm life – but he also knew that it would be a heckuva lot of fun.
And he was right. My siblings and I thoroughly enjoyed those Labor Day weekend excursions. And while I remember looking forward to all of the rides, the Curly Fries and the obligatory ice cream cones at the Dairy Wives hut, I also happily recall our annual trip to the animal barns, where we would learn (once again) the difference between dairy and beef cows; where we’d ponder the strength of the massive Clydesdales; and where the grande finale was always a visit to see the mama pig and her litter. (After 15 minutes or so of assimilation, we even got used to the smell. …) More…

It’s back-to-school time – and that means it’s time to purchase all of those pencils, markers, crayons and glue sticks.
For some families, unfortunately, the cost of supplies is simply out of reach. And, with our current recession, the numbers of families who need help buying school supplies has increased. “Times are tough right now, and we are seeing more families struggling to provide basic needs,” says Cara Larson, family educator for the Children’s Home Society of Washington (CHSW).
It’s in that spirit that CHSW is hosting a “School Supplies Donation Day” on Saturday, Aug. 29 from 11 am to 3 pm at the CHS office, 309 W 12th St., Vancouver. Families are invited to attend the event to sign-up to receive school supplies for their children – or they can attend and donate needed items. More…

I’m very aware that surfing the ‘net can quickly turn into a MONUMENTAL waste of time. For the most part, I manage to avoid it.
But I’ve just spent more than an hour reading the health care horror stories on Organizing for America’s health care stories site.
If you don’t think that we need to change the way that we now deliver health care in this country, I urge you to do the same. I know, from my own experience and that of friends and family, that there are problems with our health care system. But I truly didn’t realize just how systemic, widespread – and heartbreaking – the system’s injustices are. More…

It’s easy to forget that we moms need to fill our souls from time to time if we’re going to have anything left to give to our partners and children.
The thing that fills my soul to overflowing is spending time in nature, doing something active. A few weeks ago, on an assignment for another publication, I finally got out to the Banks-Vernonia Trail, a 21-mile former railroad that has been converted into a walking and biking trail.
Leaving my kids at home with their dad, I parked at the Manning trailhead just off of Highway 26, about an hour from Portland. I rode my bike through beautiful farmland before entering a densely forested corridor, where thimble and salmon berries were in full flush. Birds sang and, though it was a Saturday morning in July, I encountered only a few other people. More…
