True patriotism

Now that we’ve survived the Fourth (note to our neighbors behind us: we loved the Michael Jackson tribute but, puh-lease, next year, don’t set off your – mostly illegal – fireworks in your backyard, 20 feet from our deck and kids), it’s time to really get patriotic. As in, making our country all that it can be.
Two opportunities are coming up. The first is the launch of Family Forward Oregon, a movement with a mission of “inspiring workplaces, communities and policies that value families.” The folks who brought us the Paid Family Leave campaign are behind this effort and they want LOTS of parents to provide input on what a family-friendly community might look like. Bring your wish lists! The discussion takes place at a Springboard Innovation forum on Wednesday, July 8 from 6 to 9 pm at Urban Grind NE (2214 NE Oregon). For more information, visit www.springboardinnovation.org/forum.php.
The other opportunity is to make your voice heard about health care reform – in particular, letting our leaders know that we need a public health insurance option. On Thursday, July 9 at noon, MoveOn members are holding a health care rally at Senator Ron Wyden’s Portland district office, 1220 SW 3rd Avenue, Suite 585. At the rally you’ll hear from local residents affected by the health care crisis and deliver a massive petition in support of President Obama’s public option. Click here for more info.
Both of these are great opportunities to show your kids that the Fourth of July fireworks free-for-all is not the only (or even a good) way to show your love for your country.
