My kids like to hike and explore, but they don’t like to spend a lot of time in the car getting to natural areas. Therefore I’m becoming something of an expert on wild places in or near the city.
One of our latest discoveries is Elk Rock Island, in Milwaukie, only about 20 minutes from our home in northeast Portland. (Click here for directions.) The island is accessible by foot most of the year, except during Rose Festival, when the Willamette River is raised to allow the navy ships to pass through downtown.
According to the Portland Parks and Recreation Web site, Elk Rock Island was once home to a dance hall, and was then owned by Portland businessman Peter Kerr. In 1940, Kerr deeded the land to the city, with the stipulation that it be preserved as a “pretty place for all to enjoy.”
Now returned to its natural state (be aware, as of this writing there is no restroom available in the area), the island is teeming with wildlife. During our recent visit, my son and I saw eagles, osprey, swallows, turkey vultures, Canada geese, a racoon and a mallard with five baby ducklings. We tried fishing for minnows, using his shirt as a net, and returned home with a bouquet of spritely wildflowers.
If you have a favorite natural area within a half hour or so of the city, let us know. We’d love to find another place to explore!

Editor’s Note: Our August issue will include a round-up of other nearby natural areas, including the newly opened Cooper Mountain Nature Park. Look for the August issue beginning July 28.
