Last minute summer camp ideas

Metro Parent was asked recently to appear on KATU to give advice to parents on how to choose a summer camp. Our marvelous writer, Anne Laufe, offered these great ideas on how to pick a camp – while ensuring that it’s affordable:
1. Look at what’s available. There is a seemingly endless variety of summer camps – art, dance, theater, puppets, language immersion, equestrian, computers, cooking, film, urban farming, gymnastics, sports (soccer, basketball, swimming, ice skating, etc.) – the list goes on and on. Check our online camps listings for dozens of possibilities. Our July issue Summer Camps Section includes additional options.
2. Ask about discounts and financial aid. Many camps provide discounts for multiple children as well as assistance for those who can’t cover the costs. The squeaky wheel gets the grease – so ASK. Our online listings indicate which camps offer discounts and financial aid.
3. Make sure that you know what the camp fee covers. Are all materials included? Lunch? Before and after camp care? One camp with an all-inclusive fee may be more affordable than another that charges for add-ons.
4. Visit; check references. While many overnight camps are certified by the American Camp Association, very few day camps/classes are. The best way to determine the safety and value of those uncertified camps is to visit, talk to the teachers and ask for recommendations and references and check them out.
5. When researching the right camp for your child, keep her interests at the forefront but also remember that summer is a time to get outdoors. Consider balancing a week of indoor camp with a week of “get out in nature” activities.
Here’s hoping your kids are happy campers this summer!

In addition to the great advice here, I recommend the following two free sites for parents preparing a child for overnight or day camp:

    Summer Camp Handbook
    CampParents.org
