I just watched a trailer on YouTube for the movie “Consuming Kids: The Commericialization of Childhood” and I have to say, I’m a little scared. Sure, it was partly the creepy music, meant to raise my blood pressure and make me feel an impending sense of doom.
Yet it was also the message, repeated so dramatically by so many knowledgeable and diverse voices, that frightened me. The message that our children are prey nearly every moment to corporate advertising, intended to shape them into lifelong consumers from the moment they are born.
I’ve heard it before, in books such as Juliet Schors’ Born to Buy, and do my darnedest to shield my own children from “immersive advertising” (no cable television in my house!), but I know there’s little I alone can do to fight the constant message that more is better.
That’s why I’ll be attending the local screening of “Consuming Kids” this Sunday evening, May 31. The movie will be shown at the Church of the Child at 603 N.E. Prescott at 7:30 pm. (There will be another screening at Sunnyside Environmental School – 3421 SE Salmon – at 7 pm Friday, May 29.) There is no cost for attending. For more information and to RSVP, go to www.bravenewtheaters.com. I hope to see some of you there, and for some lively discussion following the film!
