We need your ‘save money, save the earth’ ideas!

Living Simply With childrenEarth Day is this week – April 22 to be precise…
Actually, there is some controversy around when Earth Day should be celebrated. It’s also observed on the spring equinox, typically March 20 or 21. But for most folks in these parts, April 22 is Earth Day. (You can find several upcoming family-friendly Earth Day events by clicking here.)
We don’t have a problem with multiple Earth Day observations – in fact, making every day Earth Day doesn’t seem like such a bad idea.
Anyway, we’re continuing our search for cost-cutting ideas that also help the planet (and the local community, too).
Here are a few we’ve received, so far (remember, readers submitting the Top 10 ideas will receive copies of the book Living Simply with Children, by Metro Parent editor Marie Sherlock. Send your ideas to editor@metro-parent.com):
1. Two words (er, actually, one): Craigslist. Our reader notes, “It’s a fantastic way to recycle things you might think no one would want, sell them for much needed cash and yet provide someone else with a bargain! Or, just to give away something instead of having it end up in a landfill…”
2. Plan ahead for shopping trips. Saves time, gas – and money not spent on impulse buying.
3. Delayed gratification made easy. Instead of going to first-run movies, wait for features to come to the Academy, Laurelhurst, Bagdad or Kennedy School.
4. Host a clothes (and more) swap. One reader’s school did this recently and it was a phenomenal success.
More ideas to come!

Toss those used coffee grounds all over your lawn and mix them in to your potting soil to boost your potted plants! Coffee grounds are full of nutrients and will help your plants to grow, grow, grow!
