As a child I devoured science fiction, especially Ray Bradbury. I recall being devastated by his short story, “All Summer in a Day”, in which a little girl from Earth is carelessly locked in a closet by jealous classmates during the only sun break in history on their eternally rain-soaked planet.
At the time, it was the cruelty of the children that broke my heart. Today as an Oregonian, I comprehend the base brutality of depriving a child – or anyone! – of sunshine. (Did Bradbury ever weather a Portland winter?)
If the sun comes out this week as forecasters promise, we owe it to ourselves and our children to drop everything and head outside. Anything for some precious vitamin D!
