Resolving to be thankful

“Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn’t learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn’t learn a little, at least we didn’t get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn’t die; so, let us all be thankful.” ~ Buddha
I love this quote, attributed to Buddha. It occurs to me that this one simple directive – to be thankful – could be my sole resolution for the new year.
As a parent, at this time each year, I’m spent – financially, physically and emotionally. The cultural and familial pressures and expectations that culminate in the Big Day leave me too exhausted and sticker-shocked to properly savor the presents or the joy, let alone embrace a new year. (I know the legends credit St. Nick with the gift-giving and delivery – but in most Santa-celebrating households I know, it falls upon Mrs. Claus!)
And then, shortly after Christmas, my husband was elbowed in the eye during recreational basketball. The cut was startlingly deep, bordering the eye socket, and required a four-stitch emergency room visit.
When he returned safe and sound but for a squinty, swollen wink trimmed with black thread (think “Popeye”), I melted into tranquility. His eyesight was fine; he was otherwise healthy; and visibly happy to see home, me and the kids. It was, surprisingly, so much to be thankful for…
