A few days ago, we blogged about the sad fate of a Wal-Mart worker, trampled to death at the start of Black Friday – the darkly appropriate nickname given the day after Thanksgiving, when the holiday season is initiated in bizarrely materialistic fashion by throngs of shoppers looking for bargains.
We promised some ideas on how to reclaim December – and now we’d like to deliver. If you’ve got a few minutes, read our online article on Simplifying the Holidays. One of the resources we mention at the end of that piece is a short, sweet and very profound book, Hundred Dollar Holiday: The Case for a More Joyful Christmas by Bill McKibben (Simon & Schuster, 1998). Highly recommended for those who observe Christmas as a religious holiday (and food for thought for all).
We know we’re not going to single-handedly change consumer culture with a few blogs and an article. But it’s a start.
