Get’em Outside!

It’s “Take a Child Outside Week” (through Sept. 30). When I first read about this national movement – based in North Carolina but with participants around the country – I thought that the last week of September might not be the ideal time to schedule an effort to get children outdoors. But, as the week approached, I’ve come around.

The week that transitions all of us from summer to fall is a perfect time to watch Mother Nature at work: the weather’s still decent, the leaves are turning those glorious fall colors – and the networks are trying to lure us inside for their roll out of new “entertainment”. Click here for some ideas on fun, simple activities to enjoy this week (or any time) with your kids

Coincidentally, last Thursday the U.S. House of Representatives approved HR 3036, The No Child Left Inside Act, which would reauthorize and expand the National Environmental Education program (it still has a ways to go to become law; click here to see how you can help).

You can see a very cool video about the importance of environmental education at this youtube link.

Another great resource for the outdoors is National Wildlife Federation’s Green Hour website http://www.greenhour.org It contains all sorts of ideas for exploring the outdoors with your family and also has activites, crafts, and a cool page where you can find a list all the outdoor areas located closest to you (simply enter your zip code)

I sent the link for the youtube video to my daughter’s teacher. He sent an email back saying that it brought tears to his eyes and he would do all he can to include more outdoor time for his students! Thanks for sharing an inspiring piece!
